Guest Post: Security in Social Media – Just my 2 cents!

By Grace McCurry, Mandarin

Have you ever seen a Facebook post come through that is a re-post, inviting you to “play along”? You know what I’m talking about; the name of your first pet, the name of the street you grew up on, your favorite singer, and so on. Be careful as the “game” was probably set up to figure out your passwords. Or the one that annoys me the most, asking me to re-post a “true friendship” or “true believers will pass this on.”

Be careful! If you do not know where it originated, you could be passing on a virus or worm. The same goes with our emails. If you get an email that says one of your friends (insert name of friend) thought you might enjoy this – it is probably nothing you will enjoy and you will regret opening it. Don’t open anything you are not expecting. It’s best to block the sender, then delete.

Social Media is great when we are using it for positive messaging but it can be a dangerous place if we are not vigilant of the criminals who are out there trying to worm their way into your social media platforms. Be safe out there!
